Our book recommendation for the letter K is... Kasper: Prince of Cats
Available as a book and an eBook
Prince Kaspar Kandinsky is a cat. He arrives at the Savoy Hotel in London with his owner The Countess Kandinsky. She is a famous singer and very wealthy and in those days very rich people used to take a lot of amazing things with them when they travelled – even their pets!
This story is set over one hundred years ago, in 1912. A 14 year old boy called Johnny Trott works at the hotel as a bellboy, and meets Kaspar and the Countess when they arrive at the hotel. The Countess tells them at the hotel that she must be able to see a river outside her window, and she must also have a piano in her rooms. The Countess and Johnny become friends and she ask him to look after Kaspar while she is out each day. The poor Countess dies in a terrible accident while she is staying there and Johnny takes the cat to his little attic room and keeps him as his own.
Johnny meets a young girl, Lizziebeth, who is also visiting the hotel. One day she goes missing and he discovers her in his room with Kaspar. She loves Kaspar and she and Johnny become good friends. Together they have some great adventures.
Lizziebeth and her family are returning home to New York on the fastest ship ever and she tells Johnny that he should come with them. Johnny can’t do that because he doesn’t have a ticket, but he gives Kaspar to her to take home to America. At the last minute Johnny decides to stow away (that means to hide on the ship so he can travel for free) on the Titanic!
