Alice and her mother Ella have had a very hard life, with a lot of bad luck and strange things happening to them. Eventually Ella remarries and their lives finally seem to settle down.
Alice’s grandmother, Althea Prosperine, wrote very dark fairytales set in a supernatural world called ‘Hinterland’. Althea lived in a mysterious house called The Hazel Wood. Alice had never met her grandmother, and she had never read her book because, strangely, the book is very rare.
When Alice’s mother suddenly disappears she tries to find her. Although her mother has always told her never to go to The Hazel Wood, Alice decides she must go there to see if she can solve the mysterious disappearance.
