When Stephanie’s Uncle Gordon, a famous author, dies suddenly, he leaves her his home and most of his belongings and money. She is only 12 years old, and can’t inherit it until she turns 18.
Skulduggery Pleasant, an old friend of Uncle Gordon, also attends the will reading and Gordon leaves him only a mysterious message. Skulduggery is very strange, he wears a coat and a hat all the time, and a scarf and sunglasses. You can’t see a single part of his body.
Stephanie visits the house and finds Uncle Gordon’s last manuscript and when her mum has to leave, she ends up having to stay there alone for the night. She receives a mysterious phone call in the night and when someone breaks into the house looking for a key, she is terrified. Suddenly Skulduggery Pleasant breaks in through the door and rescues Stephanie.
After a huge fight between Skulduggery and the intruder, Stephanie realises that he is … a skeleton! He has mysterious powers and he and Stephanie join forces to untangle the mystery of Uncle Gordon’s death.
