15 year old Will lives in The Ward (an orphan’s home) in the Kingdom of Araluen, in a time and similar to our middle ages. Will was left on the doorstep of the Castle as a baby, with just a note saying that his name is Will and that his father was a Hero.
The children from The Ward are apprenticed to various craft masters in the Castle, and Will hopes to join the Battleschool and become a knight (he is sure that his father was a knight!).
He is disappointed when he is selected to become an apprentice to the Ranger Halt.
Will goes to live with Halt and is taught the skills that he will need in this new life. Will finds it very hard, but perseveres with his training, and develops a huge respect for Halt. When the Kingdom is threatened, Will must go with Hunt to protect the lives and world of the people.
An excellent beginning to the Ranger’s Apprentice series, where Will discovers that although this is not what he wanted to do with his life it is something he is really good at. This story shows that sometimes what you don’t want is the thing that you can do best.
The Ranger’s Apprentice series currently stands at 12 titles. If you like to read a series and have never read this one, give it a try. If you have read some of the series, try and read the rest.
